Port City is located on Historic Route One, also known as Richmond Highway, just south of Manchester, one of the hottest, up and coming neighborhoods in Richmond. Port City is very convenient to downtown and to Manchester, which now boasts over a dozen restaurants.
Manchester is a former independent city, which served as the county seat of Chesterfield County from 1870 to 1876. Manchester merged with Richmond in 1910. Manchester was an active Port City.
The port shipped tobacco and coal, which was mined in Midlothian. Manchester was also a port of entry for enslaved Africans, principally in the 18th Century. The Richmond Slave Trail traces the route from Ancarrow’s Landing to trading sites in Shockoe Bottom.
